Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
What are Supplemental Educational Services? The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 assures that all students have the opportunity to succeed in school, and sets student performance targets that all public schools must meet. Schools that do not meet these targets over time are called Program Improvement (PI) schools. Current TTUSD PI schools are: Tahoe Lake Elementary, Truckee Elementary School, and North Tahoe School. All schools in year two (or more) of PI (Truckee Elementary and North Tahoe School) must offer English Language Arts, reading, mathematics and science tutoring to their students outside of regular school hours. NCLB Act of 2001 provides options to parents of students attending schools that have been categorized as PI for two years or more:
1) parents/guardians can decide to have their children
participate in SES Free Tutoring or; 2) Program Improvement School Choice
(PISC). More information is available on the district website. Attending a Year
2 or more Program Improvement school is one of the eligibility requirements.
Additionally, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District is required by federal law
to give priority in placing students with tutors to the lowest achieving
students from low-income families (eligible for free or reduced meals). Only
those students who meet both of the above requirements will be placed with
their selected provider for tutorial services.
When Can My Student Apply for Services? There are two windows to apply for services: one in the fall (open from August through October), and one in the Spring (open from January through February).

SES Providers that Currently Serve TTUSDSupplemental Educational Services provides free tutoring (to eligible students) to help improve your student’s academic performance. Below is a snapshot of the programs offered by the organizations/agencies that have been approved by the California State Board of Education and that have contracted with Tahoe Truckee Unified School District to provide tutoring services. These organizations/agencies are called “providers”. To help you decide if you wish for your child to participate in free tutoring services, and to select a provider for your child, please consider the following:
READING, MATHEMATICS, OR SCIENCE? Providers offer tutoring in reading (English/language arts), mathematics or science. Ask your child’s teacher or principal to help you determine the subject in which your child could benefit from tutoring. Only one subject is available for your child. LOCATION Use these snapshots to determine where the providers are located, so that you may select a provider that is the most convenient for you and your child. You will have to provide transportation from your child’s school to the provider’s location, and some providers offer online services only. No tutoring will be offered at District schools, and the District does not provide transportation to provider locations. Some tutors offer in-home or online services. If you select a provider that offers online tutoring services, verify with the provider that they have a computer available for your child (if needed) and that you have the appropriate Internet connection to access their services. DAYS/TIMES Providers offer tutoring services on various days and times, all outside of the regular school day. Check with the providers to determine if the days/times they offer tutoring are convenient to you and your child. Also verify with the provider the total number of hours of tutoring they offer to each child. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION Check with the providers to determine how they provide instruction (e.g., one-on-one, small group, large group, etc.) to help you determine which provider will best meet your child’s needs. STAFF QUALIFICATIONS Check with the providers about their staff’s qualifications and training. Some providers require their instructors to have teaching credentials/licenses, others require their tutors to be college graduates, and some may have other requirements.
