School Site Council (SSC)
What is a School Site Council? SSC’s make important decisions at the school site about programs and spending, and are made up of parents and families as well as school personnel.
The SSC decides upon academic instructional programs and all related categorical resource expenditures for a school. Who is a part of the SSC?An SSC is a school-community representative body composed of:
■Administrators, Teachers, Classified personnel ■Parents, Students, and members of the community Why does my school have an SSC?All schools that receive federal or state categorical funding are required to have a SSC to decide how categorical funds are spent.
Who is on an SSC?Requirements for the Composition of School Site Councils:
Elementary Schools: 10 members: Principal, 3 teachers, 1 classified, 5 parents Secondary Schools: 12 members: Principal or assistant principal, 4 teachers, 1 classified, 4 parents and 2 students *Middle Schools: At the discretion of the local governing board, the middle school may, but is not required to, include student representation on the SSC. How often do School Site Councils meet? While there is no set number of meetings that a School Site Council must convene during the school year, there are required items that must be addressed by SSC by the end of the academic year. Typically, most SSCs meet approximately 7-10 times throughout the year, though more may be necessary to meet (at a minimum) the following SSC requirements:
· Elect new members · Review and approve by-laws · Review, revise, adopt SSC calendar · Review, update SPSA (Single Plan for Student Achievement) · Review, update PIP (Parent Involvement Policy) · Create a process to monitor the implementation of the SPSA and the PIP · Review student performance data · Oversee the spending of funds listed in the SPSA (i.e.: Title I, EIA, SLIB, etc.) · Hear reports from staff about selected programs for program effectiveness, funding, etc. · Review and make suggestions to this year’s parent survey · Evaluate the effectiveness of the SPSA and PIP |
